Approach to Philae

All manage to get up the Bab and a few hundred yards further, our boats swarming with these Arabs who have us in possession. And then, though the wind is good and it is broad daylight, these doughty Arabs strike work for the day. There is nothing for it but to take a walk to the pretty village of Mahatta, half way to Philae, and Philae, the object of our desire, is but five miles from Assouan and we are likely to be four or five days getting there!

It was Monday, 19 January before Miss Brocklehurst could write thankfully in her journal: “At last the Philae gets towed up the Great Bab, after breaking her rope once and nearly getting smashed. We will do the same thing, barring the breakage, and anchor soon after. The next day she wrote: . . . We anchor under the beautiful little temple of Isis at Philae …”
